PM Staff:

Saul Perlmutter, Professor

Professor Perlmutter did his undergraduate at Harvard before coming to Berkeley to complete his Ph.D. He currently heads the Supernova Cosmology Project at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory where he does research in the early universe.

Office Hours: after class on Wednesdays, 2-3 pm

perlmutter@physicsandmusic.com

(When emailing Prof. Perlmutter, try to send a copy of the email to the GSIs, since Professor Perlmutter's email tends to get so overloaded that he often misses messages.)

Terry Buehler, Instructor

Buehler??? Anyone??? Anyone??? Buehler??? I have been a lecturer and lab manager with the Physics Department for 12 years, mainly for the Introductory Physics courses (Physics 7 & 8), and a GSI for several years before that. Physics and Music has the reputation of being a fun class and I am excited to be a part of it this semester. My personal background in music...I played trumpet up through high school and could probably pick one out of a police line-up if I had to.

Office Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:30 am-12:30 pm in 214 LeConte

GSIs and Class Assistants: Extra office hours by appointment (send us an email!)

Location: 63 LeConte (Physics and Music Headquarters)

Alli Engstrom, Head GSI

Alli is a fourth year grad student in Materials Science and Engineering. Seventeen years and counting on the flute, and she is obsessed with her pets. It's almost unhealthy.

Office Hours: Tuesdays 1-2 pm in 63 LeConte

Clare Saunders, GSI

Clare Saunders is a second-year graduate student in the Physics department and works in Saul Perlmutter's group in the Supernova Cosmology Project. She has played violin for the past two decades with varying amounts of devotion and hopes this class will give her an excuse to practice more.

Office Hours: Wednesdays 11:30 am-12:30 pm in 63 LeConte

John Haberstroh, GSI

John is a first-year graduate student in Physics, with interests in condensed matter and theoretical chemistry. As a hopeful future teacher, he is also excited to have experience helping with a class which utilizes advanced pedagogical methods. He started his physics lifestyle with a physics of music class in high school and he is excited to pass the exciting topic on. Musically, he has mingled with vocals and guitar, and is currently working on learning the piano.

Class music list: Coming soon!

Office Hours: Mondays 3-4 pm in 63 LeConte

Jake Magid, Class Assistant

Jake is a third year Bioengineering undergraduate who really enjoys both physics and music. He loves drumming and is currently the Director's Assistant (section leader) for the Cal Band Drumline. His other interests include chocolate and traveling and is excited to be a class assistant for Physics and Music this semester!

Minji Cho, Class Assistant

My love for music mostly comes from my dad who loves to hear me and my four siblings playing the piano (yes, I have one sister and three brothers, and they all play the piano to some degree). I stopped learning the piano when I entered middle school back in Korea, but I have always tried to enrich my life with music as much as possible. I am so excited to share my enthusiasm for music through the Physics and Music class this semester!

Dave Carlton, Postdoctoral Consultant

Dave is a veteran GSI of physics and music. He graduated in December with a Ph.D. in EECS and is currently working at LBL. Dave and Ryan helped Proessor Perlmutter develop Physics and Music in 2005.

Chris Anderson, Web design

Chris received his Ph.D. in AS&T in 2009.
